Portfolio > "Chicago Odyssey" Portraits of Chicago Artists: A Collaboration with Carole Harmel

In her portrait, Niffenegger is divided into the seasons of Persephone, echoing the original myth. Her sunny summer nature flaunts abundant hair, graced with, we might imagine, the fruit and flowers of the harvest. In her underworld persona, a smiling skeleton hugs her affectionately, a gentle Vanitas who shares her skeletal hair-do with welcoming humor. We might title this Persoephone, still holding the fateful pomegranate in her hands, as "Humerus Embrace."
